Sustainable Business Practices
With a commitment to plant-based organic food and community health and well-being, the TONZU/ZENZO brand is a local enterprise with high ethics.
Established in the 1970s by the Chalmers family following a transformational health and alternative healing experience for a family member, the motivation to establish TONZU was born from a passion for healthy lifestyles and organic sustainable food sources.
The business claims their “number one guiding principal is that people and the environment are prioritised ahead of profits.” That means they only manufacture food products where the integrity of the nutritional value can be “maintained throughout the manufacturing process, and the manufacturing process has minimal or no negative impact on our environment.”
Living Wage Employer
TONZU was the first Auckland employer to endorse the Living Wage campaign, recognising that many New Zealanders don’t get paid enough to meet their needs, enjoy their lives and participate in society. The Living Wage campaign is linking communities all over the world with practical steps towards addressing the ever-increasing gap between rich and poor. New Zealand’s Living Wage Campaign was launched by unions, community and faith-based organisations as a step towards reducing inequality and poverty in our society.
In 2017 the company launched ZENZO, a brand of plant-based dairy alternatives with a fast growing base range, including sour cream, yoghurt and cheddar, all accessibly priced, preservative/artificial additive free and delicious.
While the TONZU brand specialises in the manufacture of traditional and sustainable 100% certified organic food products that are both good for you, and good for the environment, the ZENZO brand is bringing plan-based options onto wider kiwi tables.
