The soft and calming blue/green-coloured sheaths unique to aquamarine can be attributed to minute traces of iron within the gemstone.
This crystal is actually a form of blue Beryl and is usually found deposited alongside granite rock, commonly sourced in USA, Mexico, Russia, Brazil, India, Ireland, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Pakistan.
As the name, colour and texture might imply, aquamarine has commonly been associated with water and the ocean, believed to protect sailors ‘of old’ against drowning and often associated with fortune and protection from the gods and goddesses of the sea. The name Aquamarine comes from the Latin term ‘aqua marinus’ meaning ‘water of the sea’. Perhaps this is also why it has historically been referred to as ‘mermaid treasure’.
The calming colour and ‘vibe’ of Aquamarine also implies that it is supportive for meditation and relaxation, said to shield the aura, invoke higher consciousness, encourage service, tolerance and change.
Judy Hall, author of ‘The Crystal Bible’ states aquamarine has ‘an affinity to sensitive people’. The stone is said to be helpful in understanding underlying emotional states and interpreting feelings.
As the blue hues imply, Aquamarine supports the throat chakra, balancing communication and understanding. Helpful in times of dispute or turmoil, Aquamarine’s calming influence helps remove extraneous thoughts and extremes of emotion, aiding clarification and perception.
