For thousands of years the Baobab Tree has been known in Africa as the ‘Tree of Life’. A resilient survivor amidst the hot, dry savannas, Boabab trees may live for 500 years or more. Dominating the often barren surrounding landscapes each mature trunk rises up to 27 metres or so and has a diameter of up to 18 metres.
Not only does it survive environmental challenges, the Boabab also supports humans, providing additional meaning to its title as ‘Tree of Life’. The massive trunk provides protection and the leaves, bark, seeds, and fruit can be used as food and medicine.
The fruit is the part of the tree most often used and considered as a super-food in our modern ‘organic retail packaged’ sense. It is extremely high in the antioxidant vitamin C (four times more vitamin C than oranges) and it is also rich in potassium and iron (double the calcium of milk, double the iron of spinach and six times the potassium of bananas).
Boabab is also a nutrient packed prebiotic and an excellent source of antioxidants, essential amino acids, essential fatty acids, vitamins, minerals and enzymes.
Some of the benefits noticed when you include Boabab in your diet regularly may include; increased energy, improved skin tone, improved overall wellness, weight management, reduced signs of aging, improved digestion, blood pressure balance, mood balance and increased endurance.
As a powerful anti-oxidant and the Baobab ORAC (Oxygen Radical Absorbance Capacity or antioxidant) value is 24,000 pmol TE per 100g which is slightly more than dried goji berries at 23,000 pmol TE per 100g, and 3 times higher than blueberries.
Baobab has high pectin levels. The fruit is higher in dietary fibre than many other foods including apples, peaches, apricots and bananas, supporting a healthy digestive tract and blood cholesterol levels.
With a unique tangy taste, Boabab powder can be sprinkled onto breakfasts, stirred into yoghurt and added to smoothies, juice or water. A tablespoon of Baobab fruit powder added to baking or raw cakes can also add an extra punch of nutrients and flavour.
The ‘Tree of Life’ Boabab harvest process is traditional and 100% natural, the dried fruit is not pasteurised, heat extracted, freeze dried or concentrated. No nutrients are lost and the powder remains whole and unprocessed. As well as raw, gluten free, vegan, non GMO.
